Spook Sacks is an event run on campus and associated campaign to promote harm reduction when using substances like alcohol or cannabis.

CHoosing to Use substances

More than 1 in 2 McMaster students choose not to use cannabis, and 1 in 5 choose not to use alcohol. Being a university student, and even partying, don’t have to mean using substances!

Tips for safer partying

If you do choose to use, it’s important to stay safe. Here are some simple harm reduction tips:

Alcohol

  • Alternate water with alcohol
  • Set your limit before the night begins, and get your friends to keep you accountable
  • Keep track of your drinks
  • Eat before and while you drinkTo do list: have water in between drinks, set your limit, and have fun!
  • Pace drinks to one or fewer an hour
  • Stay with the same group of friends
  • Use a designated driver

Cannabis

  • Use products with higher CBD to THC ratios
  • Avoid deep inhalation, which increases the intake of toxic material and lung damage
  • If using edibles, take a small amount first and wait at least 1.5 hours before taking more
  • Limit your use to weekly rather than daily
  • Use a designated driver
