It’s Time… to End Gender-based Violence on Campus!
21% of students experienced at least one unwanted sexual experience
80% of victims know their perpetrator!
The age group most affected? Those who are… 17-24 years of age
Gender-based violence is prominent at all university campuses.
A study conducted by the University of Alberta found that 21% of students experienced at least one unwanted sexual experience, with the most severe issue happening during their first year. Despite popular belief, this type of violence does not happen primarily with people we might call ‘strangers’. In fact, 80% of victims know their perpetrator! Furthermore, females aren’t the only demographic
‘at-risk’ for gender-based violence. Racial minorities, queer folks, transgender folks, and those living with disabilities suffer from the highest level of violence. The age group most affected? Those who are 17-24 years of age. The problem? This is a large percentage of the demographic attending university, making it an important issue on campuses everywhere.
How are McMaster and Hamilton addressing this issue?
The Sexual Assault Centre of Hamilton and Area (SACHA) and YWCA Hamilton are working with McMaster University through a 2-year project, which looks at the campus community protocol on responding to violence, especially amongst women. The goal is to assist the University in their process of developing guidelines that will build on McMaster’s current practices and prevention of gender-based violence. McMaster already has programs in place to address these issues, and the It’s Time! Project is assisting in furthering these programs to better benefit the campus community.
