Stress Less
Stress is a hard thing to avoid. Often, you do not know what causes you to be stressed, until you are exactly that. Don’t fret – stress happens to the best of us! Rest assured we’ve got you covered with a helpful breakdown of what stress is and how to stress less!
What is Stress?
Stress is best described as a feeling of being overwhelmed. You may feel overloaded, and have a hard time handling even basic tasks. Some signs of stress include: rising blood pressure, tense muscles, rising pulse, or an increased state of alertness; these can affect sleeping patterns. When someone begins to feel too stressed, it can impact their mental and physical health, which is why it is important to do all you can to prevent unnecessary stresses while maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
How to Stress Less?
- Relax. Every now and then, you need to slow down and relax. Give yourself permission to take a break. On a break you could watch an episode of a T.V. show, do a craft, take a nap, or read a book. Whatever it is that relaxes you, do it.
- Exercise. Almost any form of exercise, from running to yoga, can act as a stress reliever. Physical activity increases the production of endorphins, which are the brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters. So, shake off those daily tensions with some movement!
- Listen to Music. Remember that old CD you used to rock out to? Bring it back out. Research indicates that music can help slow your heart rate and lower blood pressure.
- Keep Organized. Planning ahead can help you keep on top of things, so that everything doesn’t seem to pile up at once. Keep your agenda handy during classes and tutorials, so you don’t miss the next assignment deadline.
- Talk to Someone. There is nothing wrong with sharing that you need help. Whether it be venting it out to a friend, asking a professor for assistance, or talking to a professional, try not to be afraid. If you’re still not sure, go get that old journal and start expressing yourself again.
